Among summer residents, debates about the need to remove arrows from garlic continue. I want to immediately note that to get a good harvest, the arrows really should be removed. However, as experience shows, many summer residents do this incorrectly, which can lead to a decrease in yield, and sometimes to a complete loss of the harvest.

Why is it necessary to remove flower heads from garlic? It’s all about what purpose the plant is grown for. If the garlic is intended for seed material, the arrows do not need to be removed. But if the goal is to obtain garlic for food needs, the arrows get in the way, since flowering and seed ripening take away significant resources, which leads to the formation of small and less aromatic cloves, which are also poorly stored.

In this case, it is best to solve the problem smartly. Some summer residents prefer to break or twist the arrows, others cut them off, leaving a small stump of 1 cm. However, even after such treatment, the arrow may continue to grow, which is fraught with loss of juice and the attraction of pests and infections that can destroy the plant.
