Vol-au-vents are delicious little puff pastry baskets filled with creams, mousses or vegetables. Perfect as a starter or aperitif, they are always present on the party table or on special occasions.

They are easy to make at home using store-bought puff pastry. Simply cut out many slices, form rings with the special dough cutters and then place 3 or 4 layers on top of each other. Bake them in the oven and add your favorite filling at the end.

We present them in two versions, one filled with salmon and chive mousse and one with ham and green olives. The addition of spreadable cheese gives the creams an exceptional taste. Either way, you can customize your Vol-au-Vent recipe to suit your taste. Let's find out how to prepare Vol-au-Vent by following our recipe step by step.

What is a Vol-Au-Vent?

A vol-au-vent (pronounced vol-ah-vahn) is a French dish created by Antonin Carême. It is usually served as a savory appetizer or even as a dessert if the filling is sweet.

Vol-au-Vents, translated as “blown with the wind,” consist of two slices of rolled out puff pastry stacked on top of each other, one of which has a hole in the middle. The empty space is then filled with vegetables, meat, fish, sauces or creams.

Vol-au-vent are very similar to Bouchée, but the difference is in size. Vol-au-vent are 15-20 cm in diameter, while bouchée are smaller, only 10 cm in diameter.
