Dogs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. As loving pet owners, we often share our snacks with our furry friends, not realizing that some common foods can be harmful or even deadly to them. Here’s a guide to what foods to avoid to keep your dog safe and healthy.
1. Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can cause issues such as heart problems, seizures, and in severe cases, death.
2. Xylitol
This sweetener is found in many sugar-free products like gum, candy, and some peanut butters. It can cause a rapid drop in your dog’s blood sugar and lead to liver failure.
3. Grapes and Raisins
Even a small number of grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. The exact toxin is unknown, but it’s best to keep these fruits well out of reach of your canine.
4. Onions and Garlic
All forms of onions and garlic—from powdered to raw, cooked, or dehydrated—can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. This is particularly toxic in larger quantities.
5. Avocado
Avocados contain persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. The pit also poses a significant choking hazard.
