Natural Sink Unclogging: Simple Steps with Vinegar and Baking Soda

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • Boiling water
  • Drain plug or stopper

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Drain: Start by removing any visible debris or hair from the sink drain using a small tool or your fingers. This initial step helps ensure the effectiveness of the unclogging process.
  2. Pour Baking Soda: Carefully pour the entire cup of baking soda directly into the drain. Allow it to settle in the drain pipe.
  3. Add Vinegar: Slowly pour the cup of white vinegar over the baking soda in the drain. You’ll notice fizzing and bubbling as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda. This chemical reaction helps to break down grease, hair, and other organic matter that may be causing the clog.
  4. Cover and Wait: Quickly cover the drain with a drain plug or stopper to contain the fizzing action within the drain pipe. Let the mixture sit for at least 15 minutes to allow the solution to work on breaking down the clog.
  5. Flush with Boiling Water: After 15 minutes, remove the drain plug and carefully pour boiling water down the drain. The hot water helps to flush away the dissolved clog and any remaining debris. Be cautious not to splash yourself with the hot water.
  6. Repeat if Necessary: For stubborn clogs, you may need to repeat the process or consider using a plunger to further dislodge any remaining debris.
