Brown and hard after being dried in the sun, this clove flower bud has a strong and pungent flavor. Used for its therapeutic and culinary virtues, this spice has been used in Asia for over two millennia. It was introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages and has become as famous as pepper.

Most of the world’s clove crops are used to make Indonesian cigarettes. This particular tree is delicate and takes about 8 years to produce fruit. The flower buds are harvested before they open, and the crop is left to dry until it turns a brownish color.
