Over time, washing machines can accumulate residue from detergents, fabric softeners, and dirt, leading to unpleasant odors and reduced efficiency. Cleaning your washing machine regularly is essential to keep it functioning properly and smelling fresh. The good news is that you can do this effectively with just two simple ingredients that you likely already have at home: white vinegar and baking soda. Here’s how to clean your washing machine and remove unpleasant odors using these ingredients.

Ingredients:
2 cups of white vinegar

1/4 cup of baking soda

Instructions:
Empty the Washing Machine:

Start by ensuring that your washing machine is completely empty. Remove any laundry from the drum.

Add Baking Soda:

Sprinkle 1/4 cup of baking soda directly into the drum of the washing machine. Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive and deodorizer, helping to break down grime and neutralize odors.

Add White Vinegar:

Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser or directly into the drum. White vinegar is a natural disinfectant that helps to dissolve detergent residues, kill bacteria, and remove odors.

Run a Hot Water Cycle:

Set your washing machine to the hottest and longest cycle available. Allow the machine to run the entire cycle with the vinegar and baking soda inside. The combination of hot water, vinegar, and baking soda will help to thoroughly clean the interior of the machine and eliminate any lingering odors.

Wipe Down the Drum and Gasket:

Once the cycle is complete, use a clean cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside of the drum and the rubber gasket around the door. Pay special attention to any areas with visible residue or mold. The baking soda and vinegar should have loosened any buildup, making it easier to wipe away.

Clean the Detergent Dispenser:

If your washing machine has a removable detergent dispenser, take it out and soak it in a mixture of warm water and vinegar for 10-15 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any residue, then rinse and dry before placing it back in the machine.

Leave the Door Open:
