Back with his wife Ruby and their newborn daughter Jenna after several months abroad, John was enjoying the joys of fatherhood. Their German shepherd, Max, stood watch day and night by the crib, like a devoted guardian. Yet a subtle detail began to disturb the tranquility of the home: Max's insistent barking by the crib, which was becoming more and more frequent and desperate.

Disturbing clues
Over time, other elements came to fuel John's suspicions:
- Mysterious Phone Calls: Ruby would have long, hushed conversations in the middle of the night, interrupted whenever John appeared.
- Unusual expenses: Large sums of money had been withdrawn for items with no plausible explanation.
- Max, increasingly agitated: The dog shows unusual insistence near the crib, sometimes scratching the base determinedly.

One night, John waited until Ruby was asleep and inspected the crib with Max by her side. Under the mattress, he found a recent pregnancy test. The date on it was past Jenna's age. There was no way this test could be linked to him.
When John confronted Ruby, the truth came out: while he was gone, Ruby had had an affair. Overwhelmed by loneliness and dealing with Jenna, she had given in to a night of distraction.
