First worrying results
British researchers conducted a study on three groups of participants: smokers, vapers and nonsmokers. Tests revealed signs of vascular damage in vapers, similar to those seen in smokers. Among the findings: impaired blood flow and less elastic arterial walls, two factors that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
"We thought vaping was a safer alternative. Now we have to admit that it may not be as harmless as we thought," the researchers explain.
A controversial study
But these results also attract strong criticism. Some experts point out that the study has not yet been published in a scientific journal and that the sample of participants is very limited. "Comparing the risks of vaping to those of tobacco based on a small group of volunteers is premature," several specialists believe.
Others point out that the main cause of tobacco-related illnesses remains combustion: "Tobacco kills thousands of people every year. If vaping helps people stop smoking, then it is of interest," emphasizes a doctor specializing in addiction.
