The concept of the "third state" opens up new and promising avenues in biology and medicine. For example, anthrobots could be created from cells taken from the patient themselves to deliver drugs without provoking an immune response. In the future, these anthrobots could be used to dissolve arterial plaques in patients with atherosclerosis or to remove excess mucus from the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis.
These multicellular structures have a limited lifespan, degrading naturally after four to six weeks, which constitutes a “safety mechanism” causing their excessive and uncontrolled proliferation.
Developing a better understanding of the processes that allow certain cells to transform into multicellular entities after death could thus open the way to major advances in the fields of personalized and preventive medicine, with potential applications in the treatment of cardiovascular, respiratory, and many other diseases.
