Last spring, we learned a fantastic method for planting cucumbers from my aunt, Vera Kirillovna, in Belarus. This technique has been a staple in her gardening for decades. Here’s a detailed guide on how to replicate her successful method.

Components Needed

  • Humus
  • Wood Ash
  • Boiling Water
  • Cucumber Seeds
  • Shovel

Steps for Planting

1. Prepare the Garden Bed

  • Size: Dig a bed that is 2 meters long and 60-70 cm wide.
  • Pattern: Create holes in a checkerboard pattern, alternating between one and two holes. Space each hole 60 cm apart.

2. Prepare Each Hole

  • Depth: Dig a hole about 10 cm deep.
  • Ingredients:
    • Add a handful of humus.
    • Mix in two spoons of wood ash.
    • Follow with a handful of soil.
  • Mix: Blend all the components together.

3. Add Boiling Water

  • Pour boiling water over the mixture in each hole.
  • Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes to let the ingredients meld.

4. Plant the Seeds

  • Drop in 5-7 cucumber seeds per hole.
  • Cover the seeds with soil gently.
