Egg shells should be used in the garden for completely different purposes.

Gardeners often use eggshells, grinding them into powder, and adding them to planting holes as a source of calcium. But does grinding the shells into a powder actually improve their benefits to plants? We’ll talk about this today.

The composition of eggshells mainly consists of calcium carbonate (over 90%), in addition, it contains copper, silicon, fluorine and other elements.

The shell is enriched with many useful substances, but does not dissolve in water, and therefore cannot be considered a fertilizer in the truest sense of the word. Instead, it helps reduce soil acidity. However, the deoxidation process is very slow, since the shells remain in the soil for a long time without decomposition.

Calcium is necessary for our plants and soil, but in this aspect the shell is not a helper. An alternative is calcium nitrate, a water-soluble fertilizer with an alkaline reaction. It is suitable for foliar feeding of all types of plants. Calcium nitrate helps in the prevention and treatment of rot, especially with calcium deficiency, which often causes blossom end rot.
