Why do we need “black dots” on the windshield: we were taught this at university

[rotated_ad]

On modern cars, you can often notice “black spots” on the periphery of the windshield, between the dark and transparent layers. Many people consider this a design element, but in fact it is an important technical detail found on almost all modern cars.

These « black spots » are found not only on the windshield, but also on small side and rear windows, while they are not found on door windows. Let’s figure out why they are needed.

Despite many myths on the Internet about the purpose of these points, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering they explained to me their true purpose. Previously, I also thought that “black dots” were an insignificant part of the car, but this is far from the case.

These dots are the result of windshield evolution over the decades, greatly improving vehicle design.

According to manufacturers, “black dots,” or frits, are a special ceramic paint applied to the edges of glass and baked at high temperatures, creating a durable layer that is resistant to abrasion and peeling.
