We imagine everyone would agree if the opportunity presented itself – and why wouldn’t you!? In fact, the report’s figures suggest that people who work very long hours have lower cognitive abilities than those who don’t even work!
“What the authors found is that cognitive functioning improves until workers are working 25 hours a week, and then declines thereafter,” said Geraint Johnes, professor of economics at Lancaster University Management School [1]. “Actually, initially the decline is very marginal and the effect is minimal as working hours increase to 35 hours a week. Beyond 40 hours a week, the decline is much more rapid.”
That said, we understand that not everyone has the privilege of holding a high-paying job they’re passionate about and that strikes the perfect balance between work and play. If you’re in a situation that requires long hours or you’re fed up with your current job, make sure you fill your life with what you value most.
Whether it’s family, friends, hobbies, community involvement… make sure you’re engaging in these areas!
