Remove mold, but properly

2. In the case of old mold infestation: Remediation by professionals

If the infestation is older, the mold has usually already penetrated paint, wallpaper and, more rarely, even the existing plaster structure. In this case, a superficial treatment of the mold on the wall will no longer provide a permanent remedy. An expert must be called in to carry out the measures. The affected materials must be removed.

3. After mold removal or remediation

Removing the mold alone is not enough. The cause of the mold formation must be identified and remedied, otherwise the game starts all over again. Common causes of mold in the apartment and on the wall are: poor sealing of the walls, increased moisture production in the interior (e.g. from plants, drying laundry or shower moisture), incorrect ventilation or insufficient heating.

Preventing mold
Tips and warnings to prevent mold
If moisture is expected to return, you should use inorganic materials to renew mold-infested areas. These include lime plaster, lime-mineral paints (silicate interior paint), which are usually a little more expensive than the usual binder paint, but are more vapor-permeable and inorganic.
If possible, do not stick wallpaper on the critical wall areas, as these usually form new breeding grounds for mold spores. Some types of mold are suspected to be linked to lung diseases and allergic diseases, as the spores can get onto the skin and into the respiratory tract via the air.
