Install Smoke Detectors in the Right Spot
The location of your smoke detector can also cause it to go off unnecessarily. For example, a smoke detector placed too close to an oven, washing machine, dryer, shower, or light can be triggered by these sources. The kitchen or bathroom is not an ideal place to install an alarm since it may come into contact with smoke, condensation, or temperature fluctuations. It’s advised to place smoke detectors at least 6 meters away from heat sources like stoves and ovens. Avoid drafty areas, such as next to a fan or window. Ideally, place the detector at least 1 meter away from these spots. To prevent signal interference, it’s also best not to place the smoke detector right next to a light or power outlet. Be sure to install detectors in the hallway (corridor) and on every floor, especially on landings.
Clean and Inspect
Dust and cobwebs around the smoke detector can make the sensor more sensitive. The infrared sensor can have trouble distinguishing dust from smoke. Clean your smoke detector at least once a month with a vacuum cleaner or cloth. Some smart smoke detectors even signal when they need cleaning. While you’re cleaning the detector, it’s a good opportunity to check if the batteries are still working.
Older smoke detectors tend to malfunction more often. Therefore, it’s important to replace them after 10 years. By taking timely action, you can prevent them from falsely alarming.
