It is said that pork can be a “healthy” meat, but this depends entirely on how it was raised. Most, if not all, pork comes from unhealthy farms. Almost all pigs raised come from factory farms. These environments are generally characterized by inhumane conditions and are a source of toxins and pathogens.
These animals spend their miserable lives sandwiched between concrete and steel. Antibiotics are generously given with their food, making their meat even more toxic.
If pigs had enough space they needed, they wouldn’t have to soil their sleeping and eating areas, but on factory farms, pigs have no choice but to live in their own feces, urine, and vomit. Because of this, many (about a quarter) of pigs suffer from mange, a painful, extremely itchy rash that won’t go away.
Unfortunately, due to these conditions, pigs are forced to inhale toxic gases such as ammonia from urine and feces. This gas irritates the animals’ lungs to the point that more than 80% of pigs raised in this way suffer from pneumonia by the time they are slaughtered.
The horrors these creatures have to endure in factory farms are even worse, and what has been mentioned here is only a part of what really goes on behind closed doors.
What can you do?
If you insist on eating pork, do so sparingly, and if you can, make sure it’s raised without the use of antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals, that it’s pasture-raised, and fed a healthy diet. You have the right to choose, so choose wisely. Every day, you make a choice about what you put on your fork.
