For their warm, spicy taste, many cooks rely on cloves—tiny buds with a lot of punch. But, eugenol, a component of cloves, is strongly despised by many bugs and hence has great insect-repelling characteristics.

Get Everything You Need:

Dried bay leaves, about a handful

Several entire cloves

Setting Up:

Put the cloves and bay leaves in a little container or a sachet. A plain cloth bag or even just a piece of airy fabric fastened with a thread would do.

Placement:

Place the bowl or sachet in spots where you often see cockroaches, flies, or mosquitoes. Good places to put them are entryways, kitchen countertops, and areas near windows.
