European eel: between pollution and extinction
The European eel is doubly threatened. On the one hand, its population has declined alarmingly in recent decades. On the other, its flesh accumulates pollutants such as PCBs and heavy metals, making it potentially unsafe for human consumption.
King mackerel: too much mercury
Less consumed in France than common mackerel, king mackerel is still sometimes found on shelves or in imported products. This carnivorous fish accumulates very high levels of mercury, which is particularly dangerous for the nervous system, especially in pregnant women and children. It is better to opt for Atlantic mackerel or Spanish mackerel, which are smaller and less contaminated.
Farmed salmon: controversial practices
While salmon is valued for its nutritional qualities, intensive farming raises concerns. Farming conditions can promote the spread of disease and the excessive use of chemicals. Choose wild salmon or salmon from certified farms that meet strict standards.
