Mowing When It Rains: Can Wet Grass Be Mowed?

With rising temperatures and plenty of moisture in the form of rain, it’s the perfect growing weather — including for grass. But can you mow wet grass, or is it better to wait for drier conditions?

How Often Should Grass Be Mowed in Spring?

From spring onwards, the grass should be mowed regularly. In March, mow every two weeks; from April, once every 10 days; and from May, once or twice a week (unless you’re participating in “Maai Mei Niet”). Depending on the type of grass, mow to a length of 3 to 5 centimeters. Make sure your mower blades are sharp for a clean cut and alternate your mowing direction each time so the grass continues to grow upright. During periods of heat and drought, it’s better to leave the grass a little longer.

Can Wet Grass Be Mowed?

It’s not advisable to mow grass when it’s wet for several reasons. First, the grass will lie flat due to the weight of the water, making it difficult to mow it evenly and neatly. This can result in an uneven and unattractive lawn. Additionally, mowing wet grass increases the risk of mold and disease formation. The mower can also leave deep tracks in the soft ground, and wet grass can clog the mower, making it a hassle to clean. If not cleaned promptly, the mower blades can even rust.
